(Do note that all of these ideas are just concepts to show the endless possibilities for a slime-based creature, then fully thought out balanced ideas)
Slime-Molds are real organisms that have a decently high intelligence!
They're able to navigate mazes, and such, by just spreading themselves from their initial source!
They've been around for around 100-Million years, so while they're not 'extinct' they have been around since before the dinosaurs.
There's a few extinct species though of slime-molds that have been preserved in amber, so Wildcard could use one of those!
Gameplay-wise, they could be possible found around deep forests, and will consume you and are heavily inspired by the movie "The-Blob" in their behavior.
But when you do tame them (via feeding it armor pieces. The higher the percentage of the armor's protection, the faster it'll tame) it will become docile and tamed.
Wild-caught slime-molds don't do much, but it's once you start breeding them is when the fun begins!
Once you get your first-generation in captivity, it can now be attached to you and reinforce your armor, but at the cost of rapidly consuming your character.
This can also be applied to tames, but the same rule applies. (possibly even structures to be able to increase their tier by whatever is higher. So thatch acts like wood, wood acts like metal. But metal and tek aren't effected)
But the biggest mechanic is that the more generations go by, the less and less they'll do damage to you. Even possible to completely remove them killing you and your tames overtime.
A few additional ideas:
-Be able to possible mimic other tamed player creatures, akin to a Ditto in Pokemon. And even change the name of the mimic-slime to appear allied to the opposing players tribe!
-Be able to consume Melee weapons, and then transform into them while in your hand! (so you can easily go from a pike, to a sword, without having to worry about weight since it's all one creature)
-A bit silly, but be able to attach them to gauntlets to be able to swing like a bloodstalker!
-Or attach them to your boots to act as primitive tek-boots, and you don't take any damage! (but your poor mold does )
-NEW IDEA: Be able to also mimic wild creatures, so when you're out exploring The-Island, you could be trying to tame a long Raptor then 'BOOM!' it covers you with slime, and engulfs you!
Only way to get it off is with another player or tame that attacks it. (it's a opportunist predator)
When it's in its mimic form, it takes a quarter of whatever stats the creature had and the exact same color regions.
-Its health differs how big it is!
If it has very low max HP, it's the size of a compy. But if it has high mutated stats, it's max size is of a raptor! (or possibly carno!)
-While not in any form, it can still be useful, as it's slow as an old-man. Once it does catch you, it will engulf you, as you can't attack back!
It's melee damage changes it's acidic damage, so the higher the melee the more rapidly its prey will die! (and when it does kill and consume a prey. It increases its hunger and takes all of the items without them being harmed, if it's a a domesticated slime!)
NEWER IDEAS:
-Be able to camouflage itself. Changing its color it the surrounding environments, and can be applied to survivors if they have one currently being worn.
-The slime can possibly split itself into many smaller forms, at the cost of losing its HP until it becomes whole again. But the use of this is to have many fast slimes going after single targets to swarm them
-The stats don't work the same, and are like lightpet stats.
Stamina will increase its regeneration. Oxygen can increase how fast it can heal you. Melee damage effects how fast it can absorb stuff, etc.
-A natural cementing-paste producer. It requires nothing but the flesh of the damned, and so it'll endlessly produce cementing-paste.
-Another thing is a free-version of the Noglin, with possible mind-control.
-BIG BOOM!! Akin to the brachydios from Monster-Hunter. For any fist-combat creatures or players, it can wiggle itself to your fist and act as explosive gauntlets!
The melee from the user effects how much damage the slimes explosion will do.
EVEN NEWER MECHANICS:
-An alternative taming could be needing to find them in caves.
You'll need to either scrape (akin the the Leed) or flat out cut with a sword a segment off of the mold. The mold will then drop a shard of itself, inheriting a single color-region per shard.
You'll need to collect an X-amount of them, and you can then put them together to make an egg/a miniature slime-mold.
Which ever shards you put together will determine the color region of the tamed slime. So you can hybridize multiple slime-molds to get a very colorful one, or just farm the same mold for shards to get an exact copy of the parent slime.
-You'll need to feed it Element-Ore for it to both grow, and charge it's abilities. It's akin to a Ferox where it's addicted to Element, but in this case it's Element-Ore.
-For a breeding-mechanic, it could have it rely on Element-Ore to gain mass, and since slime-molds reproduce by themselves. It could have it where once it gains enough mass, you can cut off a tumor it has grown, and that tumor will grow into a new slime-mold, causing a new generation. (which would still tie into the generational-mechanic where they get more passive each generation.)
Something to note, is that in the wild this being has a very "The-Blob" type of personality, with many horror factors. Being it's own apex without being at the top of the food chain in its own weird way.
But once tamed, it acts as a lovable dog to its owners, and will make cooing sounds akin to the slimes in Slime-Rancher.
But the moment it enters combat, it goes back to its rabid horror personality.
